Patti and Randy of Eat Travel Happy (on YouTube) travel in their 27', 2016 Forest River Sonoma. I first discovered them on YouTube, traveling to some wonderful places and of course it involved incredible food too! I caught up with them over the weekend online to see what they’d been up to and they were kind enough to grant me an interview for the Fern the Camper website. Cheers Patti and Randy!
FTC: How would you describe your adventures on your Eat Travel Happy YouTube channel?
ETH: “When you're on the road, every day is an adventure. You never know what's up ahead. You think you have everything planned out and then everything changes. So, I hope viewers are seeing the adventure that RVing brings and the unexpected.”
FTC: What was your most epic adventure? How long did it last and what happened that made it most memorable?
ETH: “Our very first trip across the country, 18 states in 28 days. The video on our main channel page documents that trip. We had never spent that much time on the road. We learned a lot from that trip. We didn't want to go home at the end. The people we met along the way is probably what made it the most memorable. Sitting for hours, listening to stories about their lives. This happens on every trip now. You get to slow down and talk and learn.”
FTC: If you had to travel to only one more place, what would it be and why?
ETH: “This is an easy question for both of us. We want to travel to the U.P. or Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Mackinac Island. This area is so beautiful! The people in the Midwest are so kind and welcoming, and the food is amazing! We travel to the Midwest every year, but we have never had enough time to visit this area because of the distance.”
FTC: What is your best travel tip?
ETH: “We try to never drive more than 4 hours, and we want to be parked for the night before dark. This was a game changer for us. This way you're not over tired when you're trying to find a place to park for the night. Even if you have reservations, it's not a good idea pulling into your campground in the dark. This keeps you from having accidents and fewer arguments!”
FTC: What was your best eat and did it ruin food for you forever?
ETH: “We both agreed on this one too! Sid's Diner in El Reno, Oklahoma. The best burger we have ever had. I would get in the car today, just to travel to Sid's! Also, the people there couldn't have been nicer. I was debating between the burger and a hot dog. I ordered the burger and they brought me the hot dog free of charge because they wanted me to try it! Wow!”
FTC: When did you get bitten by the travel bug?
ETH: “We have owned RVs for 30 years, but we never traveled very far. Ten years ago, we were on a flight coming home from Florida. We were sitting on the plane in Dallas on the tarmac. They kept us on that plane for 8 hours! Half of that time, they wouldn't let us unbuckle our seat belts or use the restroom. It felt like prison! I could have driven home faster. We wasted an entire day on that plane. After that, we bought an RV. I won't travel any other way. The freedom of having your home with you is priceless.”
FTC: What's on the cards for your next adventure?
ETH: “We are headed back to Minnesota in the fall to work the Sugar Beet Harvest again. We will also travel through South Dakota, Wisconsin and visit friends in Chicago.”
The Sugar Beet Harvest sounds like a real treat, I’ll be looking forward to seeing that vlog when the post it on YouTube. If you’d like to follow Patti and Randy, you can find them on YouTube HERE.
Stay safe, and keep camping!
